Following the widespread unrest and protests in Tibet throughout March 2008, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office is not actually advising against travel to Tibet, however travel to Tibet requires the permission of the Chinese authorities and they have said that they are not currently processing applications for travel to the region. It is therefore impossible to travel to Tibet at this time.

Crossing fro Nepal to Tibet, via the "Friendship bridge", climbing up and over the great Himalayan divide, to the high Tibetan Plateau beyond. Driving through the "wild west" that is rural Tibet, before entering the capital of Llasa, with the Potala Palace dominating the skyline, and its wealth of monasteries.

Itinery Day Route Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu, transfer to hotel, and check-in. No organised activities. Day 2 Kathmandu, day experiencing the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. Day 3 Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (4-6 hrs), the trail-head for your 7 day trek through the Lantang valley (max altitude 3870m.) Day 4 Trek Syabrubesi to Chantang, passing through forests with frolicking langur monkeys. Climbing out through a drier landscape of scrub oak and cactus, finally descending to Chantang. (6/7 hrs) Day 5 Trek Chantang to Langtang Day 6 Trek Langtang to Kyanjin Gompa Day 7 Hike up the edge of the glacial moraine, for the vantage point above Kyanjin Gompa for the spectacular views of Langtang Lirung, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji (6575m), and the foot of the impressive Lirung glacier. Day 8 Return trek to Lantang Day 9 Return trek to Changtang Day 10 Return trek to Syabrubesi Day 11 Return drive to Kathmandu, with the afternoon free to relax. Day 12 Depart for your Safari in Nepal's Chitwan National park. Day 13 Elephant Safari, spend the morning on the back of an elephant getting up close to the parks Rhinos. Day 14 Jeep Safari Day 15 Canoe and foot safari Day 16 Return to Kathmandu Day 17 Kathmandu to Zhangmu (2300m) - 123 Km. Drive to the border with Tibet crossing "The Friendship bridge" (6 hrs), after completing customs & immigration formalities, pick up bus or truck to Zhangmu and Guesthouse. Day 18 Zhangmu to Old Dingri (4350m) - 244 Km. Drive (8 hrs) up onto the Tibetan Plateau to Old Dingri, crossing the Lylung La (5050m) and Nyalamu 3800m) passes. Offering outstanding views of the high mountains of the Himalayas from the North, including Mt Everest. Day 19 Old Dingri to Xigatse (3900m) - 244 Km. (8 hrs). Drive across the barren beauty of the Tibetan Plateau to Xigatse home to Tashilumpo Buddhist monastery, and its huge Thangka wall. Day 20 Xigatse to Gyantse (3950m) - 90 Km. visiting the town market and the monastery in the morning, after a 2 hr drive to Gyantse, you have the opportunity to visit the Khumbum stupa and Phalkor monastery. Day 21 Gyantse to Llasa (3650m) - 259 Km. Drive (8 hrs) via the "Turquoise Lake" of Yamdruk tso, over two high passes of Karo La(5010m) and Kamba La (4794m), culminating in Llasa the capital of Tibet and home to the famous Potala Palace. Day 22 Two rich cultural days sightseeing the culture and history of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism. Touring the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung monastery and Barkhor Bazaar. Day 23   Day 24 Transfer to Gonggar airport (2 hrs) for your flight back to Kathmandu. A stunning flight, flying across the roof of the world, on my last trip we flew directly over Mt Everest, in the clear skies the peak looked so close as to be able to step of from the planes wing directly onto the peak itself. Day 25 Kathmandu, a further days sightseeing, Durbar Sq and the monkey temple, or choose an optional scenic flight around Mt Everest itself. Day 26 End of tour and return home.
